It won’t be long now: you can hunt birds in Missouri starting this Saturday, September 1, when dove season starts statewide and runs through the end of November. Heres’s a roundup of season-opening dates for several other bird species in the Show Me State.
The state’s three teal zones open on September 8 and run through September 23. You can see the geographic boundaries of the three—the south zone, the middle zone and the north zone —using FarWide’s powerful search engine. The south zone extends north roughly 75-100 miles from the Arkansas border and stretches the width of the state, including the area around Cape Giradeau. The middle zone is the center of the state and includes the areas around St. Louis, Kansas City and Jefferson City, as well as the Mark Twain National Forest. The north zone extends south from the Iowa border and includes the areas around Hanibal, Kirksville and St. Joseph.
Crow season starts November 1 and runs until the beginning of March. Crows can make life pretty miserable for farmers, so Missouri allows you to take as many as you’d like, and also allows the use of electronic calling devices, so have at it. It’s a great way to hunt birds.
The early season for Canada geese and brant begins on October 6, and open season begins on Veterans Day, November 11 and runs through February 6. It’s apt that open season begins on a day set aside to honor military veterans, because like many states, Missouri offers a great deal for military personnel who have been active within the past 12 months: a hunting permit for a mere $5.
American woodcock season begins statewide on October 15 and runs through the end of November. You can take three woodcock a day, and use a dog to help, but your shotgun can hold no more than three shells at a time; it’s only sporting, right?
Finally, a middle zone youth hunt will be held October 20-21. Kids 15 and under can hunt for ducks, geese and coots as long as they’re accompanied by an adult, 18 or older, who is anot allowed to hunt for ducks but can go for birds that are in season. Bag limits are generous but there are species limits, which you can read here.
