Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been identified in Idaho. In late November a mule deer tested positive for CWD. To see how widespread the disease might be in Idaho IDFG has decided to organize an emergency CWD surveillance hunt. This hunt will include both mule and whitetail deer, along with private and public lands.
These hunts have special requirements that must be followed to be eligible to harvest a deer. First, you must be a resident of Idaho to purchase one of these tags. Public land tags go on sale 12/7, and private land tag sales go on sale 12/8. Tags are first-come first-server. Only a limited amount of tags will be sold per hunting area. A total of 1,527 tags will be available.
Specific instructions must be followed when processing the animal out in the field.

- Public land hunts beginning December 7, 2021, at 10 a.m. MST
- Private land hunts beginning December 8, 2021, at 10 a.m. MST
- Tags are first-come, first-served
- Tags must be purchased at Idaho Fish and Game regional offices or the MK Nature Center in Boise only.
- Cost: $10
CWD has been an ongoing problem with much of the country and Canada. This disease can be fatal to deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer, and moose. An infected animal may take a year to show symptoms. Symptoms include drastic weight loss (wasting), stumbling, listlessness, and other neurologic symptoms.
